SLT Laser Procedure
Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is rapidly becoming a first line treatment for glaucoma… the first treatment we recommend when a patient is diagnosed. Additionally, SLT is often recommended as an alternative for glaucoma patients who already are on eye drops, in an attempt to better control the glaucoma or possibly decrease the need for eye drop medications. In these patients, SLT is a great option for those who don’t always remember to take the drops, those who have difficulty getting the drops into their eyes (because of arthritis, for example), those who get redness or irritation from the eye drops, or even for patients who simply would rather not use eye drops if there is another safe option.
SLT is a safe, fast and easy procedure which is conveniently performed at our office. This outpatient procedure is painless and takes just a few minutes to perform. The doctor uses an eye drop to numb the eye, and a contact lens instrument is placed on the eye to help us focus for the procedure. SLT works by gently treating the area in the eye where fluid drains out of the eye to allow fluid to exit more efficiently. No preparation is necessary, and patients may resume normal activities immediately.
