CHRONIC BLEPHARITIS
Chronic Blepharitis:
Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids. Symptoms can include swelling, redness, burning, soreness, flaking or discharge. It is commonly associated with dry eye disease. Although blepharitis is a chronic condition, it goes through periods of exacerbation and remission (so there are good periods and flare-ups). Although we all have bacteria on our skin and eyelids, some people develop blepharitis because this bacteria causes an unusually high level of inflammation. Although there is no cure for blepharitis, there are a number of treatments that help control the symptoms and improve comfort.
These treatments include:
- Eyelid scrubs to keep the eyelids clean. This can be done using diluted baby shampoo or various commercial products.
- Warm Compresses
- Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, or lubricants; these can be used in the form of eyedrops, eye ointments or oral medications.
Remember: Blepharitis is a chronic condition that does not go away, so treatment must be ongoing to minimize discomfort or inconvenience. Visiting our office for eye examinations at regular intervals helps keep blepharitis under control.
